TRAINING OF SPECIALISTS

 At present, the University is a large education- research-and-production complex including six faculties of day-time training, a distance learning faculty, a faculty of raising the level of professional skills of teachers of higher educational institutions and retraining of specialists, postgraduate courses and courses for doing doctoral dissertations, training laboratories in various fields of geodesy, cartography and remote sensing. In the structure of the University there are science-and-production  centers GEODINAMIKA and GEOMONITORING, a complex laboratory for research into extraterrestrial territories, the Publishing House of the Journal Geodesy and Air Photosurveying, two training ranges, a few computing centers, a training-geodetic museum and a library.

Besides, two specialized colleges situated in Moscow City and the City of Kirov offer specialized secondary education training courses on Geodesy and Cartography and Land Management and Cadastres.  

 A great volume of research activities and industrial work is performed by 15 University research-and-educational laboratories developing modern instruments and technologies and introducing them into topographic-and-geodetic practice, they are also dealing with application of geoinformation systems to cartography, cadastres, and remote sensing of the Earth.

 At the University, 5,000 students and postgraduate students from all over Russia and from the CIS and foreign countries are trained. Every year over 1000 newcomers, including 750 full-time students, are enrolled at the University.

 More than 1,000 employees, including 470 teachers and 100 scientific workers are on the staff of the University. Among teachers there are 30 fully-fledged and corresponding members of various academies, 68 professors and doctors of sciences and 230 senior lecturers, who did their PhD, and candidates of sciences.

 A considerable proportion of the teaching staff has got great experience in production and scientific activities. Nowadays, 12 Honored Workers of Science, Technology and Education of Russia are working at the University. 36 persons have the honorary title of the Honorific Worker of Geodesy and Cartography.

 36 departments support the training process at the University, a majority of them being graduating. 8 new departments have been established and reorganized for the last 5 years at the University in order to start training specialists in information technologies, application of up-to-date hardware and technology to the field of geodesy, cartography and cadastre. The University has founded 6 branches ensuring training of specialists, on the basis of enterprises of Moscow and other cities of the central region of Russia.

 MIIGAiK is a specialized and most known higher educational institution in Russia, conducting multilevel training of diploma specialists, bachelor`s and master`s degree holders in the field of geodesy, photogrammetry, cartography, aerospace surveying, geoinformation systems (GIS), optical instrument-making, besides there are also trained lawyers, architects, managers in the field of land control and cadastre. Summing up, the University has been licensed to train specialists in 20 majors, bachelor`s degree holders in 12 majors and master`s degree holders in 24  majors.

 The training process at the University combines advanced methods of fundamental university and technical-engineering education.

 Great attention is paid to the application of computer technologies to the training process as it is a necessary prerequisite for ensuring a modern level of a specialist training. All faculties` computer centers and departments` display class-rooms are united by local networks and connected with the Internet, which makes it possible to use distance forms of training specialists, to automate and monitor the process of students` homework and tasks doing.

 The operating training-and-information system on the basis of the Internet technologies uses the university server of direct access and maintains the educational and research work of all Departments and units of the University.

 Training is conducted under modern curricula in which the role of the student`s independent activity is reinforced, it making from 30 up to 50 per cent of the total amount of time.

 Training in MIIGAiK is of a special character as much attention is paid to teaching and industrial practices ensuring that future specialists will get fully acquainted with the procedure for solving practical problems, organization and economics of manufacturing factories and corporations. Besides, students of the University have familiarization practice abroad at the bases of foreign partners of the University.

Sport occupies one of the central places in the students` life - over 30 sports groups provide classes for students and many sports teams of the University take leading places among Moscow higher educational institutions.

 In MIIGAiK there exist all necessary conditions for independent and creative activity of students - 10 departmental computer laboratories and 6 faculty computation centers have been opened there. There is a scientific and technological library with over 700 thousand books, journals and magazines.  Every year, the library gets about 5 thousand new books, journals, CD-ROMs, it has a computer-controlled catalogue of the stock in all basic scientific fields of the University’s activity; it renders various services to students and scientific workers within the framework of the interlibrary exchanging, it offers consulting on arranging reference lists, annotating technological literature and patent searching.

 The Geodesic Museum is an invaluable asset to the University, it is housed in the area of the architectural and historical complex the Golden Rooms. The museum possesses a fine collection of ancient astronomical and geodetic instruments of the 17th - 20th centuries, unique cartographical products of the same period. The constant exhibition of the museum showing the more than two hundred and thirty years` history of evolution of the University and geodesic education in Russia is actively used for the purposes of students` training and enlightenment.
